8) Torpor – From Nothing Comes Everything

London doom behemoth Torpor wiped the floor with the rest of the doom offerings this year. The long-form nature of Torpor’s songs is beautifully tempered by the bands wonderful song-writing which ebbs and flows in a wonderfully natural way that means that 11 minute monsters like From This Time never outstay their welcome. Every riff on From Nothing Comes Everything is a crushing beast of a thing that demands some serious head-banging. This record is a real masterclass of doom song-writing.

7) Svalbard – One Day All This Will End

6) Employed to Serve – Greyer Than You Remember

3) Old Skin – Beneath the Trees

Old Skin’s debut album was the most bittersweet release of the year because while it is one of the best metallic hardcore albums this country has ever produced, its release also marked the demise of the band. Given away as a pay-what-you-want download to mark the final chapter of Old Skin’s career, this is an apocalyptic hardcore onslaught that never lets up. Old Skin might be gone but they’ve left behind one of the most disgustingly heavy records this country has ever produced and it deserves to be heard by everyone.

Review: Oblivionized’s Life is a Struggle, Give Up

It’s been a long time coming, but tech-grind lunatics Oblivionized have finally delivered an album. Starting out as a 5-man progressive death metal act, the band have found powerful new legs as a trio and Life is a Struggle, Give Up showcases exactly how far the band have come since their 2011 debut EP.

Kicking things off, Lower Your Expectations manages to sum up exactly what Oblivionized are about in less than 2 minutes. The song deals in mind-melting polyrhythms, relentless blast-beats, bile-ridden screams and down-tuned guitar wizardry. This is extremely testing stuff but guitarist Sammy Urwin always chooses the perfect opportunities to lay off the technicality for a moment of groovy, neanderthal-esque head-banging like in the final moments of Cry Yourself to Ash. It’s the perfect combination of utter recklessness and it’s the sort of madness you’d probably get if members of SikTh and Suicide Silence formed a super-group.

The album’s title track is another great example of Oblivionized making technical death metal more palatable. Half way through the track the song changes from an unforgiving attack of guitar tapping and blast-beats to a slower-paced beatdown that wouldn’t feel out of place on an Oceano record. It’s not often we praise a band for using single-chord breakdowns but Oblivionized use them masterfully. Songs like Whore Dogs are all the better for their stylistic shift from angular craziness to riff-heavy sections.

We can’t continue without mentioning the stunning performance of drummer Will Merlin who absolutely decimates his kit throughout this record. A performance this furious deserves a great mix and thankfully this has also been accommodated. Most tech-metal records aim for robot-like precision in their mixes but thankfully every glorious, bass-heavy tom hit and cymbal crash has been captured with the savageness it deserves.

It’s also worth mentioning that Oblivionized’s lack of bassist is actually an element that helps this record. The addition of another guitar could’ve made this album a considerably difficult listening experience as the band’s sound is already breezeblock-thick. Urwin’s guitar-work cuts through the screaming and drumming and adds all the melody the band could ever need. Oblivionized manage to work a little too well considering their limitations.

Life is a Struggle, Give Up is Oblivionized firing on all cylinders. 5) Teef/Minors

A late release from Headless Guru Records, this split does not mess about. UK punk-thrashers TEEF have joined forces with American dark hardcore act Minors to deliver a 3 minute burst of pure aggression. TEEF are the sort of band that will have old school punks pogo-ing until their knees shatter and Minors conjure up memories of bands like Lavotchkin and End Reign which is nothing but a good thing. It might be short but it’s perfectly formed.

4) War Wolf/Crossburner

“War Wolf and Crossburner have delivered an EP that will satisfy hardcore fans the world over. This is a seriously strong collection of tunes that deserve your attention despite some small grievances with over-familiarity in War Wolf’s case and not enough time being spent driving home the strong melodies in Crossburner’s arsenal. It’s still early days for these boys but it would appear they’ve already nailed and extremely accomplished sound that I’ll be paying some serious attention to from here on.”

This split actually tries to break down the boundaries of the split record concept by showcasing two bands that are very much on the same page regardless of their differences in sound. This could have been a Loutallica but thankfully it’s a wholesome and focussed release that any fan of heavy music should be listening to.”

Review: Oblivionized and Razoreater’s This is S.O.A.N.

A split UK underground metal release? Recorded live!? You better believe it. Oblivionized and Razoreater have teamed up for a double dose of chaos that was recorded during a gig at Stuck on a Name Studios in Nottingham. The advantages of recording this in an actual studio means that even though this has the energy and rawness that comes with a live recording, it’s mixed and mastered to a professional level meaning this is one of the best sounding underground live recordings released for quite some time.

OBLIVIONIZED

Things kick off with Oblivionized who are one of the most difficult bands to categorise. The band play a mixture of mathcore, grindcore and death metal that is full of technicality and balanced with some absolutely crushing riffs from guitarist Sammy Urwin.

The band are on top form in this recording. The frantic and utterly mental drum work from Will Merlin is on full display and despite his aggressive playing style, Merlin manages to hit every one of his drum patterns with pin-point precision. This man is an absolute beast behind the kit.

What makes Oblivionized so satisfying to listen to is how they balance their bonkers technicality with moments of pure riff worship. Urwin will often drop into a thunderous groove that demands everyone in the room bang their heads and it’s captured perfectly on this recording.

The down-tuned nature of the guitar work also suits the mix as it contrasts with the drumming and vocals making each element of the band’s sound stick out in the mix. This is extremely important in a live recording as it’s very easy for these elements to meld into one unlistenable mess when every musician is giving it their all.

Oblivionized are one of the most exciting live bands in the UK and their sound is fascinatingly unique and devastating at the same time. Despite having to re-start You’re Spineless due to guitar issues, the band don’t put a foot wrong in this entire recording and it’s a beautifully visceral listening experience.

RAZOREATER

Razoreater deal with a different sort of mayhem; the band make metallic hardcore in a similar vein to Converge, Nails and Weekend Nachos which means that these boys have a thrashier and more direct playing style.

Like Oblivionized, Razoreater have a live show that will grab you by the balls and then run across the street while still clutching them. Razoreater’s music rarely slows down and the pace is exhaustingly fast. You can expect blast-beats aplenty on this recording.

Sadly the mix doesn’t work as well for Razoreater’s recording. This is down to the buzzsaw guitar tone clashing with the crash-heavy drum work. Because of the similarity of the two sounds it means it can be hard to hear the melody in Razoreater’s riffs. It’s not completely lost but sometimes you really have to pay attention to hear what’s going on in the guitar department. This is quite apparent on Razoreater’s cover of Slipknot’s Eeyore.

Regardless of mix, Razoreater’s performance is still utterly electric and it’s frankly amazing how they manage to keep up this level of intensity for their entire set. This is an exhausting experience that will keep the craziest mosh ninjas incredibly satisfied.

News: Help Save ‘Kin Hell Fest

The amazing Leeds metal festival ‘Kin Hell Fest took place this past weekend and despite a stunning line-up that included Napalm Death, Onslaught, Anaal Nathrakh, Lockup and UK Scumscene favourites Trudger, Hawk Eyes and Employed to Serve, the festival was under-attended and made a huge loss.

Interview: Oblivionized

On the 18th of February 2014 Oblivionized rolled through London to play The Unicorn in Camden as a part of their UK tour with Cowards. We sat down in the back of their van for a chat about the band’s recent activities. Our questions are highlighted in bold.

First of all how’s the album going? Have you finished recording?

Zac: So the album is about 90% done. I got a cold early on and I came back to do vocals, did about 4 songs and it wasn’t good so I’m going to be doing the rest after the tour. We did it at Vagrant Recordings with Tom Dring who’s the drummer from Corrupt Moral Altar. It’s the same place where we did the Confine record. The guitars and drums are already done. Will did the drums in like a day and a half and Sammy did the guitars in one day and smashed it. We did each song in 3 takes through different amps and just layered the guitars to get a nice tone.

I’ve gotta say the man’s on a mission. How many bands is he in now?

Zac: Sammy’s in 3 touring bands now and we’re not even mentioning all the secret projects he has going on where he’s recording everything at home. So Regurgitate Life will be touring soon, Employed to Serve are already touring as frequently as we are and then there’s obviously us.

You guys have a pretty hectic schedule. How do you cope with it all? Is it simply a case that you tour because you enjoy it?

Zac: Yeah it’s just fun. When I haven’t played a show for a while I feel a bit meh and I just feel like I need to get something out of my system. When we first started we did a show and then it became the main reason to do what we’re doing and most of the stuff I do is for music anyway. We’re touring almost every day this month. Last year we did 50 odd shows.

How do you guys cope financially? Is it easy to get by doing so many free shows like tonight’s?

Zac: Nah, the only way we get by financially is between the 3 of us we do some extra work on the side. Will teaches drums. Sammy does landscaping work and freelance. I sell graphics, freelance and do a bit of bar work. Financially we can usually cover all our touring costs but it’ll get to a point when you’re more determined to just go and fucking do it instead of make money. I’ve never considered doing this to make money. I’d rather save all my money and blow it all on tour. I realise that’s not going to continue to work in the long run and when you tour the amount that we do it can definitely be hard, but its worth it to experience some of the stuff we have.

That’s a good attitude man and I’m glad there’s people out there that care that much to just go and play.

Zac: Oh me too man. I was talking about this earlier but we did a tour with Human Cull back in early 2012 and we started in London and did 8 UK shows. In all of those gigs we played to like 50 people in total. One show had a secret headliner which brought in a big audience but most of the shows we were playing to like 4 or 5 people and it made me feel like I didn’t want to do it, but if I don’t keep doing this I won’t get to experience what it’s like to succeed. Eventually if you keep going more people will turn up but you’ve just gotta keep at it.

If you don’t give yourself the exposure you’ll never earn fans.

Zac: Exactly. Nobody gave a fuck about us at the time but it’s got better. Eventually the longer you keep at it people will start to come to shows. I’m never gonna live a rock and roll lifestyle but if we can ever earn some money from it so I can afford the rent or whatever then great.

I wanted to talk about the recent What You Have Become compilation, in particular the title track. Is that going to be on the album?

Zac: That’s not gonna be on the album. We have a bit of a joke between us…

Will: [Will jumps in the van] What’s going on in here?

Zac: Oh we’re just doing an interview. If we’re unsure about something then we test stuff to see how it goes. So that track was like a shoegaze track which Sammy wrote.

I was going to say, is that Sammy on vocals?

Zac: Yeah that’s Sammy singing and he did all the electronics. It was a bit of fun and it’s why we did it on that small run of CDs which were all hand made.

It was cool to hear and it reminded me of Nullify the Cycle.

Zac: On the album we actually have a slower song called I Pity You. It’s a really big sounding song. It doesn’t have clean vocals though. I wanted to get some on the album but there wasn’t enough time to make it all work. Eventually we’ll do a clean vocal track on an upcoming release.

So what’s coming up next?

Zac: After the tour we’ve got a couple of gigs coming up. What are we doing after the tour Will?

Will: Doing a music video in March. Finishing off the album, writing new material as we’re really keen to write new stuff now the album’s done. The album’s good but we can definitely improve so let’s write some more stuff!

I was gonna say, you guys had some line-up changes in your early days but you seem comfortable with the current the line-up.

Zac: Oh we hate each other. We’re making so much money from touring that we can’t get on with each other [laughs]

Will: We’ve got a really bad coke habit.

Zac: My Mum’s in tears every time she sees me.

Will: [in a shrill voice] “Why are you in a band!?”

Zac: My mum’s like, “why don’t you work in retail like everyone else!?” [laughs] and I’m like, “no bitch! Life’s a struggle! Song reference!” I get all Lamb of God on her. But yeah, doing a music video and we’ve got some more gigs. We’re playing Deadbeat Festival which is a charity festival which should be good. In April we’re going to Europe with Human Cull as we’re still touring the split we did with them.

Zac: The album won’t be out until later in the year once we can get a label to put it out. In June we’re going to the States with Plague Widow to tour the This Black Earth split. That’s everything that’s currently definite. What most people don’t realise is that for every tour that goes ahead successfully there’s about 5 or 6 that never happen.

Review: Corrupt Moral Altar’s Whiskey Sierra

The grindcore/groove metal lunacy of Corrupt Moral Altar returns for ‘Whiskey Sierra’; a new four track EP for fans of Confine, Oblivionized and War Wolf. The band have taken no time in churning out another slab of extreme metal after the release of their first EP ‘Luciferian Deathcult’ back in February and it’s amazing how quick the band have grown as songwriters in such a short space of time.

The big draw on this EP is the title track which adds a brilliantly welcome element to Corrupt Moral Altar’s sound: it’s catchy. There’s a massive hook here that takes the form of a dual vocal scream of, “WHISKEY SIERRA!” This is such a simple inclusion that gives the band’s music and far more memorable quality that is then followed up with a punishing series of blast-beats. Corrupt Moral Altar have lost none of their edge by adding something as simple as a vocal hook but they’ve gained from it greatly.

The other new track on the EP comes in the form of ‘Lord’ which continues in the band’s patented Hatebreed-esque stomp but peppers the song with bursts of grindcore and crust punk to create an intense, chunky, groove-ridden piece of metal that is immensely satisfying to listen to. It lacks the hook of ‘Whiskey Sierra’ but it succeeds in showcasing what Corrupt Moral Altar do best and that’s making crushing metal that takes influences from a range of genres.

The b-side of the EP takes the form of two re-recorded tracks from the band’s debut EP ‘Luciferian Deathcult’. If you’ve already experienced the two songs then the real pull of hearing them again comes with the masterful production and mix that ‘Whiskey Sierra’ has received. Some incredible work has been done in making the whole EP sound raw and aggressive, but it’s done in a way that allows the listener to appreciate the musicianship on display. Every element of the band’s sound is as clear as day from the manic drumming, distorted bass, crunchy riffs and ungodly dual vocal attack and it’s a glorious racket to behold.

The only issue with this EP is the whole thing is over and done with in ten minutes. It’s an absolutely gripping ten minutes but it’s an abrupt start-to-finish that leaves you begging for more. In a way the band have succeeded in making a great EP that does generally make you want more from them, but in turn it’s such a shame that there isn’t a lot more new material here for existing fans of the band.

Luckily the band are returning in 2014 to release their début album which is bound to be something special if ‘Whiskey Sierra’ has anything to say about it. Corrupt Moral Altar already sound like a band who have mastered their groovy grindcore and after this ten minute burst of extreme decadence you’ll be more than happy to see more music from the band roll around sooner rather than later. ‘Whiskey Sierra’ is a solid yet short release that will leave fans of extreme music extremely satisfied. More please.
